The summit of Mt.Oku-hotaka is the highest point of Hotaka mountains. Together with Mt.Yari-ga-take, it is called “Yari-Hotaka mountain range” and is a very popular area for climbers.

The summit of Mt.Oku-hotaka is one of the best viewing point for mountain lovers.
In the book titled “One Hundred Mountains of Japan”, it is simply called Mt. Hotaka, but there are four mountains with “Hotaka” in the name in this range. They are Oku-hotaka, Mae-hotaka, Kita-hotaka, and Nishi-hotaka. In addition, there are Mt. Karasawa and Mt. Myojin in the same area.
The highest main peak is Mt. Oku-hotaka, which has an altitude of 3,190m. It is the third highest mountain in Japan after Mt. Fuji and Mt. Kita-dake. However, in 2014, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan changed the elevation of mountains nationwide, and now Mt.Ai-no-take in the South Alps is the same height as Mt.Oku-hotaka.
However, it is the highest place in the North Alps. When it is sunny, you can see not only the mountains in the southern part of the North Alps, but also Mt. Yatsu-ga-take, the South Alps, and Mt. Fuji. And if you look closer, you can see the peak of a rock called Gendarme.
By the way, the true summit is in the stone wall under the stone shrine, and it is said that the exact altitude cannot be measured.

How to access to Mt. Oku-hotaka
(1) The most popular route is to enter from Kami-kouchi and stay overnight at Yokoo or Karasawa. The next day, go to Mt. Oku-hotaka via Shiradashi-no-col.
(2) Enter from Kami-kouchi and stay overnight at Dakesawa Hut. The next day, the route over the Tsurione ridge to Mt. Oku-hotaka is a little long and difficult.
(3) The route to climb from Shin-hotaka Onsen in one day requires a long time and physical strength, so it is quite tough.
(4) The route from Mt.Nishi-hotaka to Mt.Oku-hotaka via Gendarme is very difficult and only experts can pass.
